Q: Do I have to be gay to be a member of Rainbow Union?
A: No. Rainbow Union is open to people of all sexualities, including heterosexual or “straight” allies. RU will not ask you to define or share your sexuality with others in the group.
Q: How is confidentiality handled at RU?
A: The CAYA house, where the meetings are held, is considered a “safe space”. It is a spoken and acknowledged rule that any personal information that is shared in the room, including sexual orientation, stays in the room. Not everyone is “out” in all aspects of their life, so this information is considered privileged. Feel free to share information about the topics we discuss freely.
No one is required to sign in with their name (an “x” is fine…but we do like to keep a head count!) or leave contact information in order to be at the meetings or events.
Q: What if I can’t make all the meetings?
A: Just come to meetings when you can! Whenever you want to join our events, projects, and discussions you will be welcome. College students are busy….we know.
Q: I’m so confused about all the terminology and abbreviations – what does it all mean?
A: Queer terminology is constantly changing, so many people who are in the community are confused too! Check out the “Talk the Talk” page to get a list of some of the common terms and abbreviations that are used. Q: I’m not a Drake student but I’d like to be involved – what can I do?
A: Rock on! You are welcome at all meetings and events whether you are a Drake student or not. |
